Building coordinated, inclusive systems that help small businesses thrive.Small businesses are the backbone of every local economy. Yet in many communities, the systems designed to support them are fragmented, duplicative, or incomplete. Entrepreneurs often struggle to find the right resources at the right time, while technical assistance providers operate in silos without shared data, coordination, or strategic alignment.
The Coalition prides itself on serving as the District’s community quarterback, coordinating community partners to close these gaps, creating stronger, more connected ecosystems that ensure every small business has a clear pathway to start, grow, and scale.

Our Approach
Drawing on more than two decades of hands-on experience in Washington, DC, The Coalition has developed a proven model for ecosystem building that emphasizes coordination, capacity, and sustainability.
Through the Advancing Communities Institute, we’re here to help other jurisdictions assess existing resources, identify gaps and overlaps, align stakeholders, and design strategies that make small business support systems more efficient and effective. Our approach is collaborative, data-informed, and deeply grounded in local context — ensuring solutions that last.
We conduct comprehensive ecosystem mapping and assessments to identify service gaps, overlaps, and opportunities within the local small business landscape, providing a clear roadmap for strategic investment and coordination.
We strengthen the capacity of small business technical assistance providers through training, peer learning, and infrastructure support to improve service delivery and ensure small businesses receive the help they need, when they need it.
We facilitate cross-sector collaboration to align programs, capital, and services, creating seamless and accessible pathways for small businesses across every stage of growth.
We develop data-driven, place-based strategies that outline clear priorities, stakeholder roles, and implementation plans — helping jurisdictions build inclusive, sustainable small business ecosystems.
In Washington, DC, The Coalition has served as the central hub for small business ecosystem coordination, uniting partners across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Our leadership has helped streamline resource delivery, strengthen networks, and guide investments that expand opportunity for entrepreneurs, particularly those from historically underrepresented communities.
