Hundreds of people, including advocacy groups, housing organizations and D.C. residents, gathered on Saturday to call for more affordable housing in the District.

The Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development organized the event held at Foundry United Methodist Church in Northwest.

WASHINGTON — There was standing-room only at Foundry United Methodist Church in D.C. on Saturday morning, where hundreds turned out for the Fulfill the Promise rally. Organizers are hoping to ensure affordable housing, end chronic homelessness, and make sure all who need help finding a place to live have somewhere to turn.

Use It or Lose It: A Legislative Tool to Save Affordable Housing Hasn’t Been Funded

In February 2008, Marion Barry, then the chairman of the D.C. Council Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, introduced a bill to help preserve affordable housing in the District. If a property owner was going to sell an apartment building that was home to low-income residents and put affordable housing at risk, the legislation stipulated, the District would have the chance to step in and buy it in order to keep those apartments affordable.

Number of homeless in D.C. region rises as rents increase
