Home News and Updates Arepa Zone | A DCSmallBizHelp.com Case Study

Gabriela Febres and Ali Arellano are partners in life and in business. Ali is from Venezuela and has been an entrepreneur since moving to the United States about 10 years ago. Gabriela and Ali gained experience running a business in Venezuela before starting ArepaZone, but they needed guidance in navigating the start-up process in their new home.

The couple noticed a place in the market for Venezuelan arepas – a delicious flatbread made of corn and filled with different ingredients. They reached out to the Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC) for technical assistance and guidance in applying for financing.

After much work and due diligence, Ali and Gabriela received a $25,000 loan to help them secure a commercial kitchen they use to supply their expanding food truck business and coveted station at Union Market.

ArepaZone has been featured in the Washington Post, and was voted the second best food truck in the District in its first year of operation. Ali and Gabriela still count on LEDC’s trainings and resources to enhance their business management skills.

ArepaZone’s success exemplifies the essential impact of financial and technical assistance on our region’s economy when combined with forward-thinking and fearless entrepreneurs.
